Thanks to all that gave feedback on my post last week. Here's my attempt to incorporate your advice with the same subject...
Camera - Canon 40D (first use)
Aperature Priority - f/2.8
auto ISO - 200
suto ss - 1/8192 sec
focal length - 200 mm
I would have cropped a little closer, but I'm afraid I'd have clipped the 3rd baseman in the background or the action of the pitcher would have been too close to the left edge. What do you think?

you have some poles and stuff sticking out of places that they should not be sticking out of. Other than that it is pretty good. I think I like the first one better because you can see the guys face better but the DOF is a lot better in this one IMO.

Thanks for the input, Rex.
As I was cropping, I recognized the the shot may have been better had I positioned myself to catch the 3rd baseman to the left of the pitcher (move myself to the left). This would have put the pitcher's action coming more inot the frame in addition to showing me more of the pitcher's face. As a bonus, the batting cage (extra poles) would not have been in this angel. thanks again.
Would cropping the top lessen the distraction of the poles in the background?

Cropping the top off would help a bit but then you will be left with a panoramic crop. It would be very simple to just clone/heal out the poles from the batting cage however if you wanted to go that route. Of course the best thing would have been to reposition yourself so that you would not have to do all this work in post but oh well.....
