Hi all,

So I was in at the shops on the weekend looking at lenses asking about the Macro Lens - Canon. I tried the 50mm non macro lens and liked it but I am more interested in the lens above as it mentions in the review that it is also a good portrait lens.

I am interested in any comments on this lens and also photos. If you have any other suggestions they are welcome also.

Thanks in advance.

I'm really wondering how that lens could be a good portrait lens. It's such a huge zoom that you'll have to be standing so far away from your subject.

Let's say you want to take a picture of a person from their waist up, so about 4 feet or so (allowing for some space above their head). By using that calculator I posted in another thread yesterday, you'll need to be at least 18 feet away from your subject in order to achieve this shot (assuming that you have a 1.6 crop factor on your Canon and that you're not turning your camera sideways).

Or say you want to take a picture of someone who is 6 feet tall and are allowing 6 inches above and below them in the framing of the picture. You'll need to stand 32 feet away from them to achieve this (again, assuming you have a camera with a 1.6x crop factor and aren't turning the camera).

Here's that website with that calculator again.

Ok so I bought the lens on the weekend and think it's a great lens to add to anyones collection. The best results come when I put it on a tripod!!! Wonder...

I took some photos of the moon the other night - still to put them on flickr. I am going to upload some here and I have some questions to ask in another section of this website.

Until then..

Cheers

How did I miss this thread:o ? I think you will love this lens. Takes tack sharp shots. Never tried it for moon shots though. Generally I use it for macro and close portraits.

I seem to be unable to find the other thread where you showed me the milk, water drops/splashes.... :(
