Would this lens be good for creating bokeh in a portrait photo?

Also, would the kit lens in the Canon Rebel (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) create bokeh?

Yes, both of these lenses would create bokeh. Bokeh is more the result of DOF and aperture setting. You can only stop down both these lenses to 3.5, so bokeh would be a little more limited then it would with the 50 f/1.8 which can be set as low as 1.8. That is why a lens like the 50 f/1.8 is considered a portrait lens.Check out this short video on the blog http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/depth-of-field-video-tutorial/. It will give you a little more info then you need, but will help explain DOF/aperture.

This portrait was taken with that exact lens (on a Rebel XT), and the bokeh's not too bad (although I'm new to more serious photography):

That said, I just ordered the "nifty fifty" - Canon 50mm f1.8 (http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=20368&JRSource=googlebase.datafeed.CAN+50MM%2F1.8) to play around with, specifically for portraits, so we'll see how that goes.
