and the D40 would still be available?

I went to Camera Canada.com and they have notes that the D50 have been discontinued but the D40 hasn't. I was curious as to why this would be.

This may help a little http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=nikon_d40%2Cnikon_d50&show=all. Try clicking on their in depth reviews for a better understanding of the differences.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize the D50 was older. I guess I assumed that the D40 was older since it was lower in number and the D80 was better and the D200 was best yet.

Leisa thank you so much for pointing me towards Henry's. I discovered that they teach camera classes even for my Sony P/C camera. If you book a class during the month of March (even if the class isn't in March) you save $25.

For 3 hours a class on the Sony Camera is $35. I know most of the stuff is gonna be stuff I know but if it helps me get some better technique and learn about ISO's a little then how could it hurt.

Thanks Sara for the link but so much of the comparison are over my head as I have no clue about any of the technical stuff. But I did note that more users reveiwed the D50 and it seems here that more users have the D50 as well. Perhaps that is a testimony to the camera?

I am currently saving for my first DSLR and it may be a little while because I want to buy new afterall. Hearing the discussion about shutterlife kinda opened my eyes.

Correction the D50 had 6.1mp and the D40x which is 2 weeks old has 10.2mp but still only can handle AF-S lenses.. unlike the D50 has more of a lens range :)

since the D40X is out i wouldn't even bother looking at the D40 unless it was $$$issues...

Just thought I would add some information that Ken Rockwell has on his site concerning the D40/D40X...

Taken from http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40x.htm

"The D40x was announced March 5, 2007. It's the same as the D40 with a few more pixels (the sensor comes from the D80), a slightly faster frame rate, a much slower maximum flash shutter speed (sync) and a whopping 33% price increase.

I had a prototype in my hands Wednesday, March 7th, 2007. Shipping product doesn't arrive until April 2007.

It's great: the same as my D40. I love my D40. I'd much rather have a D40 or D40x over any other DSLR priced under $1,300. Luckily, the D40 and D40x only cost half that.

I'm not that excited about the D40x, because is loses some of the things I love about my D40: it costs $200 more and has a much slower sync speed. I don't care about resolution.

For now, I'd pass on the D40x and get a D40 instead. They are the same camera, and the D40x costs much more for no significant change in quality or performance. My two favorite Nikons are my D40 and my D200; I'd pass on the D40x and D80 to save my money to step up directly to the D200 to see any real improvement.

Of course if there was no D40, I'd get the D40x, and at it's price point I still prefer the D40x over any other DSLR. My concern is that I can get the same thing for $200 less in the D40."

I have found Ken's site to be very helpful and although I don't agree with everything he has stated, this kind of sums it up for me, I would get the D40 and use the $200 savings towards glass.

Good luck!
