This is a thread dedicated to the must have 50mm "Nifty Fifty" prime lens. The only rule is that ALL shots posted in this thread MUST be shot with a 50mm PRIME, no exceptions.
Please state the 50mm used for each post. For example: "AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4"

...I love this lens, every shot comes out great. Case in point?...I simply stopped typing, picked up my camera sitting next to me on the desk, asked one of my kids to look at me, pushed the button.

Canon 50mm f/1.4.
This guy just happened to be in the arrivals lounge of the airport when I was waiting to pick up family. Asked his carer if I could take a shot of him - I think it turned out ok...
I could post endless 50mm shots - the lens pretty much lives on my camera as I love it so much.

Very nice shots, all. My 50mm has really been the go-to lens recently. It's hard to beat!
Here's what I've been working on with my 50mm f/1.8 lately:

Thanks Nicole....I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong....
Here is mine - my 50mm lens with ISO 200, f/4 and 2.5s shutter speed (a dim room on a murky morning). After setting up the shot, the main challenge was moving at the right speed to get a good blurring effect on myself.

I'm another one of those people who love this lens. It practically lives on my camera. But it's perfect for low light. Granted, I'm sure a 1.4 would be even better for it, but the 1.8 was much more in my budget.

You guys are killing me with this thread. I want a 50mm lense, but I just spent all of my money on the new camera. So I keep talking myself out of it. Then I thought, maybe just maybe I'll let myself go and get the 1.8, but no, I really really shouldn't, plus I think if you are going to do it, get the one you really want the 1.4. No stay strong! Then I come across this thread....I feel myself getting weaker aannddd weeaakkkeerrr.

Yeah, but I've heard from a fellow Nikon user that the f/1.8 is actually sharper in general. Not that I've been able to compare seeing as I only have the 1.8, but it's what I've heard in discussion at a Flickr meet. :p

I have not got time to search for it right now but, in a recent discussion, someone shared a link to a site that compared the result of 50mm prime lenses. I think it looked like the f/1.8 did have marginally better results than the f/1.4. Of course, that depends on make and model rather than just the generic classification.
Hopefully someone will remember or know what I am talking about and provide a link.

I've heard the same thing about sharpness between the two, and I've used both the 1.8 and 1.4. My Dad has the 1.4, which he has loaned to me on occasion before I got my 1.8. I did not perform any head-to-head type comparison, but having used them both I noticed no obvious differences.
Feel free to love or hate Ken Rockwell all you want, but he reviews the f/1.8 here (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018daf.htm) and the f/1.4 here (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5014af.htm), making some direct comparisons. His take is that the 1.8 has slightly less distortion, and is "just as sharp." At another point during the reviews he comments that you need to stop the f/1.8 down a stop further than the 1.4 to get the same sharpness. Either way, he describes them both as "super sharp." So it probably doesn't matter.
I do find that I use the 1.8 at f/1.8 quite often, making me wonder if I would gain something by getting the 1.4. If I can get my Dad's 1.4 for a week maybe I'll shoot some comparison shots . . .

I find myself dialing down to 1.4 often, but usually just because I can. :D
If I stop at 1.8, I think to myself, "Well why stop here? you paid extra for that one more click...so click it!"

I still don't understand those graphs. I read the "how to understand" section, all I got from it was that "the higher and straighter the better." Then it said that you can't get a final evaluation from it due to other data needed like colors and softness or something. I'd need to see shots instead of reading about it. Then of course if you are using a D3, D300, or D40...all that goes into play as well. Hmmmm, this is just like my other hobby...guitars. The amp, guitar, pickups, strings, effects, tubes, speakers...they ALL affect the final result.

This is all some really great information for me on the difference for the Nikon 50s. I will definitely be keeping track of this and doing some research before I make up my mind. From what I have been reading here on DPS I mainly want it for lowlight situations. I will be taking pictures of a friends wedding in Aug., very small, which is good because I do not really do portraits, and I want something better than what I had for another friends wedding last Aug. (this years bride loved last years brides pics). Time for research.

Yes, the 1.4 Canon is better than the 1.8 Canon. Interesting that the reverse is true for Nikon.

I love it because it lets in so much light, but it does seem a little soft when wide open. These were shot at F4 and F3.5, respectively, and that's where I seem to notice an increase in sharpness.

A lot of my favourite photos of all time are taken with my canon f1,8 50mm. Like Nicole I often wonder if I should save and upgrade to a 1.4 given the amount of time I use the 1.8. I also wonder about a wider prime like a 35mm or 28mm...
But I digress, here's two of my favs, both taken with the 50mm. (Couldn't decide which to post so here's both)

I got it, I got it, I got it - my lens arrived last night and this is the first one (with limited choice around my house) of my friend's fish - Whitby - in his tiny fish bowl - a Japanese Fighting Fish - taken quickly but still with detail in the face. I just love this lens - and can't wait to try some more over Easter.

I recently purchased a Nikon d40 and have been considering my next lens purchase (I have the kit 18 - 55 mm lens). I like shooting wildlife, so I have been considering a telephoto lens, but the 50 mm f/1.8 also really interests me. I can't decide! I like the price of the 50 mm, and I love not using a flash, so I know the pics would be amazing. But would I rather have a telephoto now? So hard to decide!
Great thread!!!!! Thanks for sharing the pics!

Hey..
I'm really fascinated by all the photos you guys have been shooting and showing - at this point though I'm torn by which 50mm to buy?? The f/1.4 or f/1.8?? I know it comes to economy and personal preference - and I know this might have been asked before - but what would you guys recommend?
I did ask at the local photography store - the guy said that the f/1.4 is of much better quality and produces better quality images every time; at any given f/length - is this true and is it really worth the extra 200$??
As a comment I would like to add that the f/1.8 costs 270$ and the f/1.4 a whopping 630$

Either that or they get better mark-up on the f/1.4 ;)
I'm sure I've seen a test that compared several Canon lenses and the f/1.8 came out pretty well. Of course, I can't find it right now but did dig up a couple of other sites that may be of interest, here (http://x.chang-sang.com/blog/?page_id=8) and here (http://photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/).

Oh goodness, that's precious.
What does a 50mm lens do?
Take magic pictures?
More helpfully, I think the kind of 50mm lenses we are talking about accomplish a number of things.
1. They are typically "fast" - f/1.8 is common and some go faster. That means you can open up to a very wide aperture, which means light gets in quickly so you can use a fast shutter speed (or a usable shutter speed in low light conditions)
2. Very wide apertures also mean minimal depth of field when shooting nearby objects, which gives lots of scope for playing with what is in and out of focus as part of the composition
3. These lenses typically also give very sharp results (the designers can optimise how the internal elements work rather than having to find the best compromise as the user zooms between focal lengths)
4. The lenses are also relatively small and light (certainly much easier to carry than a 70-300mm, etc).
5. Finally, the fact you can't zoom in and out and so have to think about where you stand to frame the picture often sparks creativity.
So that is why, in more detail, a "nifty fifty" can be a magic lens.

Wulf
Thanks for the info Wulf! I had never heard of a nifty fifty until I joined DPS...It definitely seems like one I will want in the near future!

That was what I was thinking and going for when I took that photo.
I updated my sig as well. I have a Tamaron 28-90 lens that is over 3 years old and
was on my N80, but I just can't bring myself to put it on the D70s.

You are correct, I did change the white balance between the two photos - just used preset and shoot a piece of white paper for the second shoot...it just seemed so much better color.

Bokeh is a Japanese term that refers to the out-of-focus blur caused by thin depth of field and a wide aperture. It can also be spelled "boke".
Since the rules don't mention adding something to the 50.. :)

Hey everyone. I found this thread on Photojojo.com. Great place by the way. But anyway this is a fun little DYI project for the 50mm. I made a smiliar lens cover to what they show but i added two tabs to the front so i could slip in and out the cut out shapes. I used black construction paper, electrical tape, a hole punch for the shapes and Christmas lights on the floor. Have fun trying it out.

I do. Only recently started when I finally figured out how to process them. A tutorial from meet the GIMP helped a lot http://meetthegimp.org/episode-11-raw-converting-with-ufraw/

I think I'm in loooove!! And my birthday is soooo far away:(
Thanks for starting the thread Nobie. I've been thinking of getting a nifty fifty for some time. Just trying to decide whether build quality and ~half stop extra with the the 1.4 justifys the price over the 1.8. I think you have to be a pixel peeper to see the difference in the image quality.....who am I kidding, thats me all over:p
PS to FotoMike...
...........But anyway this is a fun little DYI project for the 50mm. ..........I used black construction paper, electrical tape, a hole punch for the shapes and Christmas lights on the floor. Have fun trying it out.

I have a 50 now, I can join in this challenge...yea!!! I took some of these flowers for the wide open challenge, and I liked how some of the others turned out as well. These flowers were in a cart in the hallway at work waiting to be thrown in the trash. I took quite a few pictures of them because I liked how they looked all clumped together.

Background: Given, this photo could have been executed much more effectively. In this circumstance, I arrived at my bank to find people gathering in wait for Hillary Clinton to arrive at the Ashland Springs Hotel. I grabbed my camera which was in the car with me. Nice thread. I love my nifty fifty & always use it for portrait shots. It's great to see it being used so successfully for other things too.
Here's my latest 50mm shot

...and this was one of the first pictures I took when I first bought the lense. I'd read it was good in low light & wanted to test it out.

I love them. I totally agree about 50mm lens. Just really annoying when you have to walk in and out to get the subjects in the frame for me.

I quite like it - it forces you to stay close to your subject & is more challenging.

Great photos Scatterbrain! I love the colour one: great framing and the eyes are really clear and mesmerising. Very cool.

These are taken with the canon 50mm f/1.8 II. I bought this lens about a week after the camera on the advice of a friend with the same one - and haven't looked back. Really enjoying learning how to get the best out of it.
That said - noob warning...

I was out taking some portrait shots of my girls when this little fella came into view so I took a quick pic of him. I thought it came out pretty well considering I hadn't set up for thi type of shot. I wouldn't normally think of using my nifty fifty for nature pics.

Thank you. Yes it is. I had to do a little research, like posting it in the share your shots section, where I was promptly informed what it is. :)

These two brothers were boffing in an alley behind their home in the Railroad District of Ashland. Boffing, I learned today, is combat with safe, foam weapons.
