Gipper doing his best Fidel impression. He wouldn't sit still facing the camera, so the best I could get was this profile. Should I try to do some post processing to lessen the shadow in the background?

I tried to enter your exif info but it isnt being displayed on flickr.
Anyway, which shadow are you talking about? If you are referring to the one in front of the dog then yes I would either it clone it out or crop it down.

The object in the lower right hand corner is distracting. Too bad you did not have an off camera flash to lessen the dog/treat shadow. Your dog might not have looked at you but I think the dog’s expression (eyes) and looking up and out of the frame works well because it adds some attention/interest.
