I've posted this in the "other" section because I don't think it is an action photo as the subject (me) was pretty static while the image was taken. It was taken by a friend on a pretty standard digital point and shoot. I really like the image and want to try and get the best from it that I can.

Please can you comment on the crop, the photoshop work done so far and photoshop work that could be done.

I've tried to crop it small to bring out the buisness part of the image. I've taken the rope and made it follow the left vertical third of the image. I've tried to make my eyes on the top vertical third, and probably the big rack of equipment hits the rightmost vertical third.

The image isn't as high res as with my SLR and when I zoom in it quickly gets pixelated. The colours were pretty bad. In life the rock was a beautiful red; this was lost in the photo. The sky was blue and bright and is just washed out in the image.

I made a new layer and manipulated the colours until the rock was the colour I wanted. I then made a layer mask and brought the sky out of the previous image. This improved it. I then went to the original layer (with the sky showing) and found that I could bring back an attractive sky colour by reducing the brightness. I mean massively reducing the brightness, by about 70%. This meant that the rock became really dark. When I looked at the merged image it didn't work as the rock had a dark purple edge to it and looked obviously photoshoped.

What you see now is a comprimise from the sky that I wanted and not looking too photoshoped.

Can I do this in a different way. I tried fiddling with only the blue/cyan channels but then the sky looks unnatural.

Any ideas? I'm only just begining to learn photoshop.

Thanks, Tony

Here is the original which might help with comments regarding the crop.
Thanks.

Hi Tonyb:
I like the photo and the crop. What I would try to do is to get rid of the rock in the right side and have only sky in the background. I think it will add more drama and sense of highness.
Thanks for sharing it.

Do you mean photoshop away the rock? I don't think I could do that. I agree that it would make the photo more interesting, but the photo is only really for me and I'd feel that it was too altered.
