Hi

This is my first post on this forum and wonderful website. I've been a fan of the DPS blog for quite a while and think it's time to start contributing my photos in the forum.

This one is from a charity drive in one of the townships near Johannesburg, South Africa. I call it 'Our hope for the future'.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rafiqs/2275543830/" title="our hope for the future by rafiq s, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2404/2275543830_1446cb2a89.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="our hope for the future" /></a>

Exposure was 1/200 at f/2.5 and the flash fired to fill in some shadows by the harsh sun. Overall it was maybe one or two stops overexposed but this was adjusted quite nicely in the RAW software.

I've got all my photos up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rafiqs but will post a few more in some of the other forums in the coming days.

Hope you like it.

I really like the shot of the lady, but the sun on the boys head is a bit harsh. I'd do a tighter crop on the right also.

I also agree. Love the shot of the lady, but need to tone down the sun on the boy's head.

Thanks for the tips. The sun was quite harsh and high up in the sky at the time of the photo. Just out of interest, without having to wait for the sun to lower how else could I avoid such a bright bloom?

It's a great shot but...

The girl's face is more prominent than the babys but because we read photos from left to right my eye couldn't settle. I kept sliding across to him then back to her then.....

A simple horizontal flip with a slight crop seems to me to improve the shot

If you have an off camera flash unit you could try setting the camera to expose for the brighter areas (boy's head and the white hood on the girl) and then dial up the power of your flash to fill in the rest of the detail.
