This is a picture that I took 2 years ago at a family reunion. There was an attached petting zoo at the place we had it. I took this picture for my cousin who was in boot camp at the time and he LOVES ducks!

I use a Cannon Powershot A520 camera.
How could I lessen the shadow on this picture? Any suggestions for a better picture?

Welcome to DPS!
I would start by getting your white balance adjusted, likely some contrast too, and a touch of saturation...followed up with some unsharp mask. What post production software do you have available?

Aww cute duckie! ;) Anyways, is that your own shadow?
I'm not an expert but as much as possible, as I was told, avoid shadows cast on the subject. And, I think, shadows can be easily avoided when doing outdoor shoots.
Anyhow, I am still trying to understand photography myself so if I'm wrong, I'd stand corrected. :)

In terms of post production, there isn't a whole lot that you can do in order to eliminate the shadow cast by the duck on the grass.
If taking the picture again, the easiest thing to do would be to stand between the duck and the sun, making sure than the shadow is cast away from you. This way it is less perceptable. Or, you could compose the photo with the camera lower to the ground. You will get less of the ground in the picture, but the shadow will not be as evident.
Cute duck though! Looks like you got pretty close. They are usually afraid of me.
