I'm interested in people's opinion of this shot. I find the shadows on top of the Phalanx a little distracting, but I tried to minimize it using levels in Lightroom.

The EXIF information is on Flickr, but here's the basics: Nikon D80, f/5.6, 1/320, ISO 200

It seems a bit squeezed in the frame. Is this from a ship you are on at the moment? If so, it would be worth looking for some different angles and also seeing if you get opportunities with better lighting.

Having said that, I think the shadows on the weapon are a positive thing - without them, it would be very plain and featureless round the top.

Thanks, Wulf. Unfortunately, I am no longer in a position to go back and try to reshoot or I would try to find more interesting lighting and angle, as you suggested.

I was originally drawn to the juxtaposition of the Phalanx and the ship's wake and tried to find an interesting way to get them both. Perhaps if I got a little more directly behind the Phalanx, I could have capture a more interesting image.

I really like the shot a lot. The light blue in the wake really makes it quite vibrant.

I love the colors of the water. Over all I think its an interesting picture.

The possibilities of having the opportunity to shoot on a military ship wood be endless. I'd love to spend a few hours trying it out.

I may be wrong, but that looks similar to the old school GE mini gun. Getting some night shots of that doing its thing wood be priceless.

Thanks, Kirbinster! :) The water truly was beautiful. I wish I had caught a few more photos of it. The only ones that show off the blue were the ones I shot off the stern and into the wake. I thought this shot was the best of the ones I took.

Wood, you have me thinking of ways I can go back and try to get a night shot of a live fire! The biggest problem with night shots on a ship, though, is the engine vibration that gets transferred to the camera through the tripod. I took a few night shots, but they didn't turn out as sharp as I had hoped. The best ones I took were from my mini-tripod. Maybe a bean bag would work better.

I along with the others really enjoy the vibrant colors in the water. I wish there was a little more contrast or light casting on the weapon to see all the intricacies in its design. Great photo though!
