I was taking pictures by the 9/11 Memorial in Morris County, NJ this morning and caught this crystal and candle on the wall and thought it caputered a mood:

What do you think - does it capture a mood?

Shot real fast to get a tight DOF, but maybe I should have lowered ISO down to 100 to get even tighter.

Camera: Nikon D80
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: f/5
Focal Length: 155 mm (70-300vr)
ISO Speed: 200

I'm not sure if it captures a mood. To me it looks like a candle and a block of glass. I can't read what it says on the glass, so until you explained it was part of a memorial, I didn't know what it represented.
I think the dof is ok and I like the contrast of textures: the smooth glass and the rough concrete. Long shadows are nice, too, but it's not holding my interest.
Were there more elements that could have been included? For example, showing the block and candle focused in the foreground with larger parts of the memorial, a flag, flowers or people visiting it in the background out of focus. The glass block might be able to be used in a different way if you could revisit the site. Perhaps reflecting the rest of the memorial.

Maybe you have to look at a larger version to see the images of the twin towers in the glass block.

There is a huge memorial there, and this was just sitting on the granite ring around the steel. I thought there was something about just this image, but maybe you have to have the entire perspective to see the value.

Here is a shot of the entire structure:

Neither shutter speed nor lower ISO will give you a tighter DOF as long as the aperture remains the same.

Thanks, I realize that - I was talking about changing one of those to allow for a more f-stop.

Oh, sorry. I didn't understand. To be fair, I was really surprised to read what I understood and then your signature with all that equipment in it.

the leading edge of the glass block is slightly out of focus.....i would tighten that up a bit by focusing on the nearest subject to my lens....

your second post, however, is absolutely stunning with it's color and clarity....
