Mini Schnauzers with bad back ground

I took this picture last spring while I was on vacation in Virginia. I cropped out a lot of distracting stuff, but the back ground is still distracting to me. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to improve the contrast with the back ground?

Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 31.9 mm
ISO Speed: 64
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

Maybe you could blur the background with photoshop...
Or if you have the chance to reshoot use a longer focal length,the longest your lenses are capable of, with the widest aperture setting possible,the background should be blurred because the DOF is smaller

I agree that the background really is quite distracting. Honestly I'd just crop it down to focus more on the dogs.

Thank you for the ideas. I am new to post processing photos, but it is on my list of things to learn this year. I will try the cropping idea to see what that looks like. Unfortunately, I can't re-shoot at that location.

What stopped you from getting closer to the dogs? Moreover it does not quite look like f/4, as I see a lot of the background in focus. May be I am wrong!!

Well, I tried a tighter cropping. The dogs pop out better, but it got a little grainy. The camera is only a 3 megapixel, so not a ton of info when I crop too close. I think it is an improvement. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
