Maybe you could blur the background with photoshop...
Or if you have the chance to reshoot use a longer focal length,the longest your lenses are capable of, with the widest aperture setting possible,the background should be blurred because the DOF is smaller |

I agree that the background really is quite distracting. Honestly I'd just crop it down to focus more on the dogs.
