Default Bambi is sad, he needs help being beautiful

Hey there,

First off I will say I personally like this pic but I know there is more I can do to it to make it better. I am wondering if you have any suggestions for cropping or post-production effects or changes that could make it better. I know it is general, but I can't put my eye on what needs to be done to it if anything.

Cool photo.

To me, the problem is that just the nose is in sharp focus (and that the eyes aren't in sharp focus).

Since the focus point is the nose and since the depth of field is narrow this close up, the eyes are blurry.

You could try to sharpen just the eyes in post, but I'm not sure how much this will help.

In the future, focusing on the eyes should help. Also, using a narrower aperture (and increasing the ISO if you need to keep the shutter speed up) will help get more of the face in focus.

I don't mind the shot as is but for me, what would make it difficult to punch it up any is that the deer blends in with the background too much to effectively make any changes to it.

Chip has pretty much nailed this. One thing I have found out, you can be slow, but it is hard to be too fast when it comes to wild life. One can shoot for effect after mastering the basics. I am still working on that myself. Wild life doesn't always give you the chance to think about what you are doing. Sometime 'auto' works in your favor, sometimes it doesn't. Keep at it for sure.

J. R. Weems- sorry about the typo in user name, I have ask to no avail to get it corrected.
