I rather like it with the black background. Could be more interesting in a more natural setting, however it could also make it more distracting. Great shot.

I find the hair on that knuckle quite horrifying.

I had the same thought that outside might be better but i have a p&s with no manual focusing so it can be hard to blur the background.

Unfortuntely My photoshop skills weren't up to the challenge of removing the hair and if this was a planned shot i would choose a different hand model lol

thankyou both very much for taking the time to comment

Great color and detail in the mantis. Looks cool and evil at the same time.

For me, though, the things I might change are: (1) the "flashy" area of the hand in the lower right hand corner - that bright area is a distraction to me - maybe it could be cropped out? (2) the skin color looks too blue/unnatural, especially when compared to the nice, warm colors of the mantis - did you change the skin color in post, or was this caused by the flash? and (3) I don't know if it would've been possible, but getting closer and filling the frame more with the mantis would've helped, too.

I don't think placing the subject in the middle is a problem or makes the photo boring.

My 2 cents.

The hand was converted to black and white because I found it too distracting I agree that the bottom right part of the hand is a little blown out but when I was playing around with cropping it seemed to throw off the balance in the pic. I hope I will get another chance to shoot a praymantis again soon
