Default Hyper Raccoon

Raccoon

The raccoons come out at dusk in Central Park so I will get a chance to do this again. I was in manual mode for awhile and getting a lot of blur -- the photographer next to me said to switch to Aperture Mode and open it up and use a central spot auto focus, which I did -- but my highest ISO is 1600 and it made the shutter speed too slow (his camera went to 3200, so I guess it worked for him). So every picture is blurred. What should I do next time? What's the best way to shoot an active animal at dusk with my ISO limitation? Thanks.

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.2 sec (1/5)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 70 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

Sometimes certain conditions render it impossible to get the shot you want. If you are at your max ISO and are at max aperture then all that's left is introducing more light using your flash. Even if you could use ISO 3200 it would only increase your shutter speed from 1/5 to 1/10 of a second - you'd still get a lot of motion blur. Or you could use a tripod so that the background stays sharp and then just use the motion blur of the racoon to your advantage.

Another thing you may try is to use your flash with a low shutter speed eg. 1/60 then you will more light for the raccoon and get enough ambient light to get the background on your pic.
Good luck!!

I like the shot with the blurry paws actually.

I think it gives it character.

Default 'Nother Raccoon

Well I had another go at this -- I used Shutter Priority, and auto focus with the center spot ... the pictures were extremely dark but I was able to photoshop one into submission ...

Raccoon2

Better I think ... couldn't get the eyes though ...
