Default Spider

Hello Everyone,

Here's a photo of a spider taken at night time with some light in the background. It was hard to get a clear shot since it was dark and was a bit windy so the spider web was moving.

I am new in photography and just had a few shots with the new G11 I got. Still working on the tricks and tips I've read in this site and trying to apply them in taking my photos. Any constructive critiques on this photo (and how to improve on it) is much appreciated.

Below are the details:

Shutter speed: 1/8
Aperture: 4.5
Shooting mode: Night snapshot
ISO: 1600 (auto)
Lens: 6.1-30.5mm
Focal Length: 30.5mm
IS Mode: On
White Balance: Auto
AF Mode: Continuous AF
AF Range Mode: Macro

(Let me know if you need other information)

Thanks!

I like the way the light looks on the web. The spider needs to be sharper, did you have a tripod? It can be hard to get these without one as the slightest shift in where you are in relation to the subject when shooting close up will shift your focal plane. I would also try a shot with flash to see how it looks.

Thank you, Mike. No I don't have a tripod yet hence, the blurry shot. It took me several shots to get it as clear as this. I also tried with the flash but it didn't look good (the web was not captured as well). Is there any thing else I could have done with the manual settings to make this shot better?

Hello Ros. I am sure you'll get some good advice on your shot, but the best advice I can give you is just keep clicking and experimenting on a mass of subjects. Also (the main reason) welcome to DPS and our great community of carers and sharers. I look forward to seeing many more of your pics. God bless. PAUL

One reason your web shows up good in this shot is the way the light is hitting it, from behind and to the right, which makes it show up well. A tripod will help you out a lot with stuff like this but till then, as Paul said, keep clicking and expirement a lot. The nice thing about digital is if it does not work you did not pay to have it developed.
On stuff like this where it would be nice to get a bit of fill light on the spider you can also try to reflect some light back at the spider from this side with a piece of white foamcore or something reflective like a mirror.
