The entire shot is underexposed.

Hi Artdrea--The exposure isn't that under-exposed--it is actually very close. If you have a program that you use for post processing your photo's --a minor adjustment of levels will brighten up your beautiful butterfly. You asked about the head exposure in comparison to the rest of the body---in general it's very difficult to expose blacks and whites as they are at the extremes of the dynamic range of your sensor--but I really think that the butterflies overall exposure is just fine--just needs to be bumped up a little..

You asked about what else could have been done better. I know from trying to take butterfly photos that composition can be tough as they don't like to sit still for long...I like the way you filled the frame and think the composition is good. Although, I would like to have seen the entire buttery--as it is a little distracting that the lower wing is just out of the frame.

Congratulations on a nice picture--it's pretty close to right on.

rw123,

A great review technique on a very nice photograph. You were helpful, honest, positive and offered ideas about how to make the photo better.
