For me there is just too much empty space. I totally see what look you were going for but if you could maybe go back and get the birds to pose a little close for you. lol
Serious, if the birds were filling the frame more I really think this would be nore effective

Maybe a monster crop, keeping just the 2 birds in the lower left, and having each bird in a corner of the frame? It would be different . . . but maybe it would work?

If it was possible for you to move around the water to align the birds more and lower your shooting angle you may have been able to 'compress' them and get something more along the lines of what I imagine you were thinking of.

Were they twittering?

Sorry it's a bit dull and I don't think there is much that can be done about that. We all take them, seems like a good idea at the time but isn't. Still the beauty of digital is that it hasn't really cost you anything and you can shoot loads and in amongst those will be some gems and you'll know when it happens. The more you practise the more gems you will produce.

When you have been out shooting try and divide your pics up into keepers and also rans. Then in a few weeks or months go back and look again at those keepers and see if there are any you would still keep. If there are the chances are they are worth keeping. You have some very solid kit there, but you might want to think about a 1.4 converter for the zoom lens.

Well done for posting.

another option if you dont want to spend money on a converter, or losing your quality by having to crop a whole bunch is to zoom in . Yes i said ZOOM IN, obviously your lens cant do it anymore fully extended at 200mm but all that means is that you have to do the zooming for your lens. Use your feet and get physically closer to the birds (without scaring them away that is). Now if you were already standing at the edge of the water, maybe getting a canoe or some other kind of boat and sitting out in the middle of the water there
