Default My two dogs

After some critique here. I've had my camera a week (Eos 450d) and went on a trip to Mont St Michel in Normandy with my wife and two dogs. Took several pics of my dogs, this was the best of the bunch imo.

Once I downloaded this pic to my pc, I tried one of the basic photoshop techniques found on a tutorial page and applied it to it (it was using a gaussion blur with an overlay filter with about 73% opacity). I think it turned out quite well, but I am no expert. What do you experts think?

EDIT Sorry, I've just noticed I have put this in the wrong forum. Apologies from a newbie.

Moved it to Animal Critique for you. Do you have any exif information on this shot you could post here? Sometimes knowing the camera settings (aperture, ISO, and speed) can be really helpful when people comment on your picture.

I like the post work but you might want to mask the eyes on the blur layer so they stay sharp.

I think a simple curves adjustment would suffice in creating a richer picture too.

I think I agree with you, curves would be better. However, for this photo, I find the current effect more emotive for my dogs. It's how I see them if you understand what I mean.

I agree with Neil's. To my eye, the original looks much more natural and pleasing to see. And, I too, am far from an expert.
