Hi everyone-
I recently purchased a Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens for my Olympus EP3. I practiced with it this weekend, and ended up with this shot of my dog. Could you give me some input on the focus of the picture. The depth of field is obviously very shallow on the lens, and I was trying to practice with the lowest aperture setting. I like the look of his nose being a bit blurry and the rest of his body being blurry, but I don't know if this appeals to most people. Should I have used a higher f-stop setting to make more of his face come into focus? I'd appreciate any other comments you have as well. Thanks so much! Cute puppy and cute expression on his little face! I think you did really good with the focus. I like the shallow DOF and the focus on the eyes. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the close crop near the ears. If you didn't get the whole ears in your shot, I would crop it a little closer to make it look intentional. Also, you could use just a tad more light in the picture.
Great start and keep practicing! I too am a novice, but I have learnt a lot from this site. Stick with us and you will enjoy the ride like I am!!

Thank you both for the comments. I'll go back and see if I have a version where his ears aren't cut off.
I might try sharpening the nose area a bit to see how that looks (or maybe just retake the shot with a little higher f-stop). Thanks again for the comments! This website is so wonderful for feedback and kind critique! Sarah |
