Hello everyone!

I'm not a photographer, but I am photocurious. I just got a Canon G11 so I'm pretty stoked.

What are your general impressions regarding this shot? Any helpful advice on composition or PP?

Thanks!

Camera: Canon G11
Exposure: 1/50
Aperture: f/3.5

Awww, sleepy kitty! I still have a lot of learning to do myself but I will point out what I can see. First, you need a higher shutter speed- i never use anything less than 1/60 to shoot a hand held photo (need a tripod or to rest your camera on something if you go lower). Second, I like the use of window light but it's actually taking over this image and is too bright, which leads me to the third point- your ISO is WAY too high. I have a Nikon so I'm sure it's different but just read up on ISO and how to change it on your camera. I tend to stay at 100-200 for portraits and try not to go much higher unless I need to. Why? Because, as you can see in your photo, it creates a ton of noise (the graininess). I think if you lower your ISO, you will find that the window light is going to be less harsh. If you feel it only lights the front of your cats face, try using a white posterboard to act as a reflector to bounce some of that window light onto the back of him/her. Try this again and post some more! It's really the only way to learn!
