Default Pet Photo

So I set up my ghetto lighting today and tried to take some pics of my pets. First lesson-getting them to sit still.

How is the lighting in this pic? what can I do to improve. Set up was Natural light from small window behind me, ghetto chicken light 45 deg left and flash 45 deg right.

Firstly, Cool Snake!

Secondly, (and I am not a professional, I only shoot for my own enjoyment, so feel free to disregard anything I say) I think the shot would have benefited if the background was lit up also.

I also think the head is a little too overexposed, but that could just be me and my monitor.

Yeah, cool snake. I like his prop too. And considering the tools you are working with, I think you did well.

I do agree on getting a bit more light on the backdrop. He also looks like he has more light below him than on top. That just might be his coloring though.

Only other thing outside of finding a bit more light would be to deepen the depth of field to get the entire snake and prop in focus. Of course, you would need more light for that.

Yeah, I like him/her and the prop!! I think the focus is on more of the middle of his body rather than his eye so definitely focus on the eye next time. I think you did really well with the light source you had available as well and could even look better with a white posterboard used as a reflector to even out the light! Also, watch not to cut off any parts of the body unless intentional or you can make it look intentional at least- I want to see the rest of his body at the bottom. Show us more!

I do have a reflector set guess next time I will take that out and try to work with it some. I was trying to focus on her eyes, but she is very active and just keeping her up on the table was a feat in itself.

Thanks for the advice, there are several different shot of her on my flicker if you would like to check them out.

Love the composition! The lighting seems uneven and I am losing the face, the body seems darker with the best exposure in the middle ...
