Default Lights

Last night I wasn't able to sleep and had an idea but I'm having a tough time making it translate (part of being a newbie I guess). I really like the reflection of the Christmas lights off camera in my aussie's eye but they don't seem to provide enough light and I'm getting a little blur - I could bump up the ISO but then I worry about excess noise. Any suggestions on how I could accomplish this? I picked up a external flash the other day but it seems even with bouncing that it would provide too much extra light (I'm still learning how to use it). Thanks for looking.

EXIF data

Camera: Canon EOS Rebel T1i
Exposure: 1/30
Aperture: f/1.8
ISO: 400 (suppose 800 would have been ok)
Focal Length: 50mm
Spot Metering

I think it's a kind of neat shot. Compositionally, I might try a crop that goes down the center of the head rather than through the other eye, but I'm kind of a symmetry sort of nut.

I would experiment with higher ISO for sure. You might be surprised at the results. One note though, noise shows up most in the darker areas so proper exposure is very important. Underexposure will really bring on the noise. Noise can also be dealt with in Post Processing. I use LIghtroom3 and have been quite happy with it's handling of my noisy images. I shoot at ISO 800 quite a bit and if I get the exposure right, I get some pretty nice results.

You might also try this shot during the day. Depending on where your windows are, you might be able to get more light yet still give the feeling of night time and capture those lights in his eyes.

Sweet looking dog by the way.

My dog was trying to look at herself at the mirror making sure if she is pretty enough because our neighbors dog was always trying to visit our house.

Thanks for the advice karen-s, I see what you mean about the crop the would be a better image. As for light/windows, I've been shooting in the basement which doesn't have much in the way of natural light. I'll have to experiment in some of the upstairs rooms. As for little Mira being sweet, she is definitely a sweetie but as an abused rescue aussie she still has some nutty remnants from her past life Between my lab mix that barks at the auto focus and my boyfriend who allows NO photos, she's my only semi-willing victim.

lit, you have one cute labby!!
