Hello everyone, I am absolutely new to photography and am almost a novice. I took the photo of this small yellow beaked black bird in our garden yesterday. Presently I am using a 'point-and-shoot' camera (Canon A3300IS) and intend to upgrade to a DSLR later on. Please do comment on my shot and it would be nice to know in what ways it could have been better.

Welcome to DPS and photography. It would be nice to see your shooting information. Shutter speed, apeture, ISO, focal length (EXIF data) as per Animal / Wildlife - Critique. One is supposed to ask a more specific question other that "Comment on my shot". This will aid in you getting more feedback.
On the plus side you adhered to the Rul of Thirds by not placing your subject dead center. The leaf in the picture gives one a sense of scale. Things to consider for improvement: -Give some open area for the bird to look into (negative space). Try to crop again to have the bird just camera left of center. - The subject is slightly out of focus. Without the EXIF data it is hard to tell if this is camera shake or simply out of focus. - Did you do any post production (PP)? The colors could be sharper. Check out the tutorial section on this forum and read, read, read. There is so much there to learn to improve. Good luck.
