Smile First Swim

Hi - I am a newbie and learning to shoot with my Nikon 5100. I'd like some critiques on the composition of this photo and focus or noise. Any feedback is appreciated, I'm here to learn. Thanks!

Nikon d5100
f 7.1
focul length 165mm
iso 400
lens 55-200mm

no editing ( I'd like to learn to shoot with as little editing as possible)

I like it. It's a good action shot and the colors are well balanced.

Cute pup. Looks like he/she is fascinated and maybe even a bit intimidated by that giant wave coming in.

Anyway, pretty good action and colors. One thing I might suggest is to pay attention to your light source and in most cases (not all) try to get the light behind you. The dog is facing into the shadows and it might work better if he was facing into the light. Viewers tend to want to make a connection to faces and eyes and expressions so getting light on them really helps.

Very good start though.
