Default Deer-y Me

Hi,

I thought I'd post this shot of a stag in the critique section, as I thought it was quite a good shot, although its failed to attract any comments from the SYS section.

Red Deer Lyme Park
Red Deer Lyme Park

EXIF:

Canon 7D
70-200mm F2.8 L II IS Lens with a Canon 2X II Extender
Focal Length: 400mm
Aperture: F6.3
Exposure: 1/250s
ISO: 400
Exposure Bias: 0EV

I understand the nature of SYS doesn't always lend itself to commenting from others, so my question really critique wise is, am I missing something that prevents this image being comment worthy? Should I go for a tighter crop? Should I have framed it wider to include the whole body? Is there some other issue I'm blindly ignoring?

Don't pull any punches, we only learn from truthfull comments!

And appologies for the terrible post name!

Thanks,

Paul

I think it quite a nice photo myself. I like pretty much everything about it, especially the eye contact and the framing.

And I just wouldn't put a lot of stock in number of comments from the SYS section. No comments doesn't necessarily mean it's bad and lots doesn't necessarily mean it's good. It just is what it is.

And wow, that new 70-200 seems to work well with the 2x!

It's pretty tough to find fault with this shot. The focus, color, and bokeh are excellent. The DOF is just right to isolate the foreground deer and blur the rest (I'm jealous of the 70-200 - it looks great).

I think if I were to change anything at all, I'd either compose or crop to get the deer out of 100% dead center. It almost makes me feel like I'm looking through a cross-hair, I guess. That's really a very minor quibble, though - I love the shot.

@ Dlambert - the thinking behind the dead centre approach was that the antlers struck me as being quite symetrical so I was trying to line it up as such, but yes perhaps a slight shift in perspective would improve the overall feel. I'll post a different angle of the same stag when I get home from work.

And yes, the 70-200 is a fantastic lens. Haven't been disappointed at all since I bought it!

Yeah, the symmetry jumped out at me big-time. Both antlers and the line of his neck lead me right in to his nose. Very striking.
