Default You Looking At Me?

This mama snapping turtle decided to pay a visit and make her nest. She was very determined to get the job done!

You Looking At Me?

Camera Nikon D80
Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture f/6.0
Focal Length 300 mm
ISO Speed 400

What do you think? Suggestions please?!?!? When I have the opportunity to take another "turtle" like photo, what can I do to make the turtle/subject pop more? I want to make the turtle more vivid without making the grass greener. Really want to learn to become better.

Thank you!

Well I must say it is very nice to see a poster that knows what she wants from a photograph! So you want the turtle to pop! But not have to have neon green grass to get it. Well, the skill needed is lighting, not lightning but lighting. The Strobist website has the most comprehensive tutorials and a active community to answer questions about using off camera flash and strobe lighting.

You can process and develop this capture but it will take some time and effort to produce the end result you seek. But it is good to stretch your creative muscles so give it a shot with a good editing/developing program. Seeing that you are a Nikon user I would recommend Capture NX2 and its companion (free program with limited features ViewNX). If you do try it and have question feel free to PM me and I will do my best to walk you through it.

Nice! Agree with JF on the lighting. Also I would have gotten down on my belly and in close to that awesome face poking up through the grass. Nice tight composition and stopped down for shallow depth of field, letting the face pop out form the rest of the scene.

I agree with the lighting comments, but might I also recommend a polarizing filter? It might help to reduce some of the glare off of the top of the shell and bring out a bit more detail. Just a thought...I'm kinda new to this myself.
