Hi Phoenix
I know most of the Canon DSLR line-up offers a modeling flash feature, which is basically a 1 sec low power flash from either the onboard flash or hot-shoe mounted flash unit. Pushing the DOF preview button activates it. I'm not sure about other manufacturers, but I would assume most of them have something similar. You could also use a simple flashlight, or a headlamp. Good luck!
