Default Shooting blindfolded.

Hello again, community!

Darkness come so fast! I went out to try some birding and ended up with nothing but a dark hill to climb down. I spotted something moved nearby and found a frog at a very close look. I immediately thought, "Framing!" but with no light around, I thought of trying the built-in flash (I'm not fond of it).

Here's the image straight from RAW with only resizing and repeated saving for the site's recommended quality. I gave up on this shot for framing but was surprised how the flash helped. I realized I should read much into that.

My question is (apart from critiques), how do you shoot in the dark? I can't compose/recompose without being able to see anything through the viewfinder.

Hi Phoenix
I know most of the Canon DSLR line-up offers a modeling flash feature, which is basically a 1 sec low power flash from either the onboard flash or hot-shoe mounted flash unit.
Pushing the DOF preview button activates it. I'm not sure about other manufacturers, but I would assume most of them have something similar.
You could also use a simple flashlight, or a headlamp.
Good luck!

Thank you very very much and I feel stupid not to find that in the first place. Flashlight and other source was thought of but at that moment, wasn't available. This really helped.
