Default Seagull in flight

This is my first real attempt at photographing a bird in flight. I'd appreciate some feedback on the composition and colour of the image as well as any other tips on how this or future images could be better. I haven't done any post-processing on this one (yet).

Focus and composition seem nice. The thing to improve on is to remember when you are matrix metering that the camera looks at the whole area and exposes to try and make everything work out. Knowing that the sky is going to be brighter than your subject (and there is more sky than subject), you need to use exposure compensation or simply overexpose slightly in manual to keep the subject exposed properly. This will blow the sky somewhat, but allow you to get the details in the bird that is underexposed.

As you can see in my example below, your sky is much nicer than mine, but the subject has more detail:
