On a recent trip to Florida I spent alot of time birdwatching while Mr FKG was at meetings. I've been trying to apply some of the thingsI have learnt so far on DPS (in particular 3rds rule) when sorting the hundreds of photos from the trip. How did I do? I like the crop and the brokeh; the boat passing through (is it called that when there's no sparkle?) I don't like that the bush horizon cuts through the birds head.

Great shot FKG! Shame the boat was there with the red-shirted passenger - that's a bit of a distraction, but the pelican on the post is classic. Well done!

I can see I'm never going to get the hang of this, I like the red! I could have cropped the other way but that had nothing in the background! All the same, thanks for your comments Bruce.......off to search for just the post and the pelican, believe me I took dozens of shots all around the area so I'm sure to find just the one!

I'm no pro FKG, and maybe others will have different thoughts. However, the shot is still wonderful but I've read in a few places: if you're going to take a photo of a cat, then take a photo of the cat. It's not just the red shirt, it's the boat as well imo. Oh, and if you framed him looking into the negative space it would be even better.
I think the pelican on the post looks better than a cat

2nd one is way better. It's usually better to place your subject (using rule of thirds) so it looks like they are entering the frame, not about to exit it.

You live in a lovely part of the country, we came back along the coast on our way back to Miami Int' airport. We were at the boat show in Miami and had a few days spare before business in Ft Pierce so cut across to Naples and then up and over to Ft Pierce. Would love to have had more time in the Everglades and on Lake Okeechobee.
