Default At the Aquarium

Took this at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA. It was tough getting a sharp image with these little guys swimming so fast, and with the lighting as bad as it was.

Swimming in B&W

Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G at f/1.8 1/3200s 1600 ISO. Should have lowered the ISO to decrease the noise, but I was jumping around between aquariums and some were darker than others (plus the wife and kids kept me busy ).

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Tried to write a reply to this but I guess it didn't get saved so here goes again.

You do what you gotta do in a situation like this, and the saving grace, as you say, is the sharp image of the subject. You could do a levels adjustment in photoshop/elements, I suppose, if you felt like it, but I think it's OK in that regard.

The f/1.8 aperture in combination with the close proximity of the lens of the subject -- both are important determinants of depth of field, not just aperture -- meant that a lot of the foreground is not in sharp focus.

I'd recommend a radical crop where the fish moves from the upper left rule-of-thirds position to the lower right. With the pixel density of your sensor, I think that crop will still give you a nice looking 4 X 6 print and more than enough clarity for LCD display.

Nice Capture!
