Default friendship

Hello guys, I'm posting this photo hoping to get some pointers, good or bad. Also what do you guys think of the photo, technically and aesthetically. I love this photo just because of what it meant for the guy. He was immigrant that went back to his country of origin to see his mom before she dies. He wanted to take some photos of his job. In my opinion you can see that the guy loved his job even though he was getting paid very little, anyways please critique it. Thank you.

saying goodbye

The composition is great. It does look a bit underexposed. His arm looks black and could use some fill. Maybe you can lighten it a bit.

thanks for the input jgbkab, yeah i was thinking that too about the arms. I just didn't do it because I was struggling with the skin tone. the guy's skin tone was very dark due to working too much under the sun

Actually, you can lighten the horse and man without lightening the background. Look here to get the instructions.

You're having big problems with dynamic range here. The bright sky at midday is blowing out and the shadows are too dark for good detail.

You can recover some of the shadow detail in post (LR = Fill Light, PS = Shadows/Highlights adjustment layer), which would help.

In future, I would consider shooting when the light is better when possible. Failing that, some fill flash goes quite a ways in opening up the shadows when shooting into the sun.

The other thing I would like is to have this framed just a bit lower. The horse's nose is awfully close to the edge of the frame. (Not critical, just nice to have.)
