Default Red flower and bokeh

Yesterday I took a walk down the hill to the bat sanctuary to practice and play. What I learned was I need a lens with a longer zoom and faster focus to grab the little bastards. But I snapped this on the way back. There's something I like in it's simplicity but I'm sure it could be improved..any advice?

Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS
Focal length: 55*mm
Aperture: F5.6
Exposure time: 1/100" (+0.67*EV)

I like the composition, but it seems like there's not quite as much detail in the flowers as I'd have expected. I think there's a chance that the red channel of the sensor "clipped" -- I've seen some good articles explaining why reds are really tough for DSLR's to get right, but I'm afraid I can't find any of them now (oops).

Just the reds. Try desaturating or reducing the luminence of them when PPing.
