Default Horse shot

HI there, I'm new here but thought I'd dive right in. I want to do a series of interesting horse shots mainly focusing on their heads, necks and faces. This was my first time using a DSLR (it was the Rebel Xsi). Sorry, I was just playing with it so I don't remember the settings. It was the kit lens (18-55 ?) and I just had it on AF.

I am wondering what you would do to make this a stronger shot, both with the camera settings and the editing afterwards. I like the pic but know it could be better. I cropped it back already a bit to focus in on her eyes. I appreciate the input!

I will probably get more help if you post you EXIF data and basic camera issue.

My main issue with this photo is that there is no emotional connection for me because the eyes don't pop. Perhaps a more angled shot of the head would get more focus on the eyes? I'm still fairly new so not sure on the how, that is just what struck me about the photo.

1. The picture is to large for the forum and screws up the spacing of everything. Max is 740px according to the guidelines.

2. Here is your EXIF info:

Camera Maker: Canon

Camera Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi

Image Date: 2011-02-26 16:12:31 (no TZ)

Focal Length: 55.0mm

Aperture: f/5.6

Exposure Time: 0.0031 s (1/320)

ISO equiv: 400

Exposure Bias: none

Metering Mode: Matrix

Exposure: Action program (based towards fast shutter speed)

White Balance: Auto

Flash Fired: No

Orientation: Normal

Color Space: sRGB

GPS Coordinate: undefined, undefined

3. I think a vertical crop to just outside the horse's head would be much better and change the feel of this from snapshot to something more.

Thanks! I'm okay learning from my mistakes. That's why I'm here! I am totally aware that I know nothing yet except that I know when I like what I see and am looking for ways to make my images better.

I brought the photo over from photobucket so will see if I can figure out how to resize it for next time.

Jim, how did you find out all the information? (Assuming that you were not in my back yard while I took the shot? )

I appreciate the input,

Eq

HI Genevieve.

Jim found the Exif by right clicking on your picture. All the image properties are stored with you photo.

Best of luck - keep at it.

For me the composition of this shot doesn't work - although I'm still learning myself so take what I say with a pinch of salt

I like the idea behind focusing on the eyes and having the top and bottom of the horses face out of the frame. But I think you had too much below the eyes in the frame to make the shot effective.
