truly speaking, my eyes went to the out of focus duck first and then the subject.
a closer crop would be better without the "ugly duckling"

Why don't you try cropping the duck in the back ground out?

Cause what I want is learn photography, I could easily pull that duck out of the pic with
photoshop. it would be like going to school to learn how to count, and use a calculator.

I agree. The out of focus duck is in the powerpoint of the image.

The eye tends to follow rules of left to right and thirds, since the out of focus duck fits in those more closely it steals some attention.

So you mean that this way would bring the front duck more attention

I agree with the others, I see the out of focus duck first, I would zoom in and offset the diving duck a little more.

Also in response to your comment about not using photoshop, In my mindset, photoshop use is essential for photography. In my picture critique I just posted up, the coloring and contrast was slightly off. Because I am limited on my camera resources and it was a very rare shot (right place at right time) I'm going to use photoshop to fix and help my picture rather than scrap it and start over.

If you use photoshop to help your photos, you can see what the end result should be and strive to do better in the next photoshoot. I don't think you need to scrap it, photoshop to me is not a calculator but more a pencil and eraser.
