Default Owlet--DOF

owlet2265

canon7D

100-400mm lens

f/8

shutterspeed 1/400

spot metering.

I got the opportunity capture this owlet today morning but almost missed it! the kept hoping from one tree to another and finally what I got was this shot. The bird is not clearly visible(too much clutter around it) as lot of other things are in focus. How to separate the main subject in such cases? Is it possible to have only the main subject in focus and rest of the image blurred although the distance between the subject and BG is minimum?

You did well to get this fella!

I expect people who are a lot more technically-minded than me could give you lots of advice on the nitty-gritty of depth of field. To my very amateur mind an easy way round the problem you raise is simply to crop. A fairly tight square around the owlet would eliminate a lot of the clutter. I might be tempted to try and lighten the bird's left eye too -- if I could see both eyes it might be even easier to 'connect'.

Just my 2p-worth...
