This was with my Canon Powershot and I had it on automatic settings, but I want to know if the lake in the background blends in too much with the ground. I am going to be heading to the same reserve in a couple weeks with my new DSLR and would like your suggestions on how I can improve the composition of the photo.

One thing you need to do is compose using the "Rule of Thirds", the subject is in the center of the picture and that doesn't work. The other thing I noticed is the color. It almost looks B&W yet the legs are orange. I am relatively new to this so I cannot make a suggestion as to what to do to improve the color.

A curves adjustment or a selective color adjust is what I would suggest to enhance colors!

I agree with the comments above. On top a few ideas:

- Get closer to the ground and try to capture more of the background if it is attractive enough. Also being eye to eye with any animal is provides a much closer connection in the photo.

- If scenery is not so great, zoom in on details of the bird. Its orange beak and the color and structure of its feathers along the neck may make an interesting portrait. That requires a zoom lens and some patience. Geese are not so easily scared, so you may be able to get closer to it.

Just some thoughts.
