I think it works both ways.

The horizontal crop for me emphasizes the subjects space and environment. I also get a sense of calm and aloneness and it brings back a few memories of days I spent walking the beautiful beaches of North Carolina (USA).

A vertical crop me thinks would emphasize the subject more and the environment less, but still be a very nice photograph. To me, a vertical crop of the image would make it more about the subject and the artistic elements of light and line. I still have an emotive response, but it's a different one.

It just depends on what you are going for.

And I'll just add, BEAUTIFUL light and combination of textures.

I really like this version, the horizontal. It emphasizes the lines of the bird, the waterline, the textures. Great shot, beautiful light, colors, textures. TFS!

Hi,

I like this photo. I think the composition of this photo with a horizontal crop is slightly off. I would have preferred it if the bird was a little more to the left. For this reason I think a vertical crop will work better IMHO.
