Default Hannah in the snow

Seeing we have an over abundance of snow here in the northeast every outdoor picture is going to have it and I have problems shooting in the snow, which I have to work out.

I am in the process of giving PSE a test run so I am looking for some thoughts on the composition of the photo, cropping, how to make the dog Pop and maybe dull the snow a bit.

Snow photos are not easy. You have very blue hues with the snow here, combined with yellows from the setting sun. (The sun, to me, appears to be at dusk in this photo?) And, a dark-colored subject.

The only way to get the dog to pop more would be a curves adjustment to adjust his overall contrast - but with the snow, he's dark already. So, you'd have to brighten him to actually see him. But, then he won't 'pop.'

I've had this same issue when I've tried to shoot photos of animals in snow. The only solution I've found (which I'm not crazy about,) is to pop up my flash. (I need a speedlight, LOL...)

Lauren,

YEs the sun was setting and with my dog she doesn't stand still long enough so I usually have to be quick on the shot. I kind of like the blue hue of the snow. Matter of fact I have been test running PSE and have made the snow even more of a blue. Why fight it, right.

Thansks for the comments and thoughts.
Jim
