Default Grandsons' Dog

This is my first post but I am sure not my last. Please let me know what I can do to make this better because I am here to learn so you will not hurt my feelings. This is a photo of my Grandsons' dog that I took in Texas over Christmas.
Hopefully the file goes thru with this, if not hopefully someone will guide me thru the correct way to attach files.

Thanks.

Dave

Pretty nice photo, I think there needs to be more color to it.

Do you have a Flickr account? If not I would look into getting a Pro account. It is way easier to post a photo on here via Flickr

Hi, Dave -

You captured a good moment here, with a good pose and nice eye contact.

My suggestions:

1) Either get in closer or crop more. The space to the side of the dog detracts from the dog itself. While getting the whole dog in a photo can often be good, think of what attracted you to this shot. Was it the eyes and the toy? If so, try to capture that.

2) Background - with the bottom of the fence running through the dog's head - is a bit distracting. Simple, uniform backgrounds are best.

3) Better light would help immensely. I know that if we're on a holiday, time is tight, etc, better light often isn't possible. But it's something to keep in mind for future opportunities.

4) I agree about more color, and perhaps some sharpening. Did you do anything in post on this?

Taking photos of active dogs isn't easy. You're off to a good start.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Looking at it now, I probably should have shot in portrait instead of landscape and zoomed in more.

As for the fence, composition is my weak point right now and I know that is what I need to work on so thanks for bringing that out. I should have moved so the fence wasn't in the picture. I was more worried about getting down more on the subject's level.

As for color, it was December in Texas and that is what I had to work with.

I did nothing in PP to this photo.

Sorry for the confusion: by color, I meant adding/adjusting color in post. It's pretty easy to do, and can help make many photos look a good bit better. But only if you're up for it, of course.
