I actually don't mind the stray bird parts all that much. Compositionally they create a line from upper left to lower right that keeps your eye moving. However, if you prefer to show the single bird alone, you might try a vertical crop to remove the stray bird parts. If you like the horizontal crop, you could try removing parts with the clone or heal tool in Photoshop (or similar editing software like Gimp). I find birds and wild animals don't take direction well so you sometimes have to rely on the magic of post processing ;-)
The orange bill seems to be just a tad sharper than the eye and it is usually preferable to have sharper eyes (there are of course exceptions.) Our eyes as viewers tend to be drawn to the lightest and sharpest areas of a picture and since the eyes are the windows to the soul, thats a great place to put your focus. Overall though, I'd say a very nice photo for a newbie. You have nice color and interest and I really like that you seem to have made eye contact with him.
