I'd like to know what could be done to make this photo stand out. It looks alright but there seems to be something lacking. I also think the shadow on the male's back is a little detracting...not to mention the bucket in the background.

To me, the bucket (as you already said) is a big issue. But, that both these ducks' head are in shade, and the background is in full sun (and overexposed) is a bigger issue to me. My eye is drawn to the bright background, instead of the subject. Dappled light is always tough, too.

Just pay attention to your lighting and your background. It's hard, but you'll soon start "seeing" these things before pressing the shutter release button.

Focus and details look very nice.

I agree with the bucket being distracting but I also think that if you get rid of that vertical item {post I believe} it would be a much better photo.
