Default Retired Racing Greyhound

Hello all!

I recently adopted a retired athlete from a Greyhound rescue organization. The photo below is Bernie relaxing in our backyard on the day we adopted him. My goal was to achieve a unique, fun composition. He was resting on an uphill because the yard is angled. I wanted to demonstrate that, and I also wanted to demonstrate a 'fun' feel with the tilted angle of the camera.

Could I hear thoughts/feedback/advice about the composition? Any other feedback is welcome, as well.

Thanks!

EXIF:

Camera: Canon EOS Rebel XS
Lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8
Mode: Program mode
Focal length: 50mm
Exposure: 1/1,000
Aperture: f/2.0
ISO: 400
Flash: None (natural light - cloudy evening)

oh he is adorable! Congrats and good for you for adopting an animal in need of a home.

As for the photo, I think it is very nice. The color is rich and the focus looks good too. While I am not personally a fan of the tilt this shot does seem to work pretty well with it. I think his pose and the angle you chose makes it effective in this case. It does add a sense of energy and tension and that seems very fitting for a photo of a greyhound.

And enjoy your new pup! I hope you don't have to chase him too much 'cause I don't think you would have a chance at catchin' him :-)

i've always wanted a greyhound.
i'm a bit of a lazy person, though, so i don't think they'd be the best dog for me. xD
i agree with karen. the shot is nice, and the color is very bright and a lot of detail can be seen within the photo. i like the photo, besides the fact that the subject is cute. (:

Very cute dog!
I personally like using a tilt for shooting pets, it produces some cool angles and viewpoints. My favorite is to use a tilt and some steps to produce a "I'm king of the world" effect.
Colors are very vivid also. Overall, good one

Oh, and AmberLizz, greyhounds are the perfect dog for a "lazy" lifestyle. They are the biggest couch potatoes out there, absolutely perfect apartment dogs. It's just one of those ironic things of nature that I don't understand :P

Hi Lauren,

I don't mind it, but I don't find it catches my eye that much either. I think it would be nice if you were a bit closer and we could see his eyes more, to get more of a feeling from him. Does that make sense? Maybe it would also help if you got a bit lower, closer to his level, you could still tilt your camera, but it would give a different look to it and most don't get since most stand over their subject.

I don't know these are just my thoughts. It is a beautiful dog and good on you for adopting, I love when people adopt!

Thanks for sharing this picture!

Becky
