Welcome to DPS! This is a great place for a new photographer. I have learned almost everything I know about photography from here. =)
Dogs are wonderful models. The composition here isn't totally off, but I think it would be better if the top of his head would show too. And you should definitely take more portraits of him outdoors. Cloudy weather has the best light - the shadows won't come out so harsh and you won't have to use a flash. Keep experimenting and look through other people's photos to get inspired! =) Have fun! |

I agree with the previous comment regarding taking photos of the dog outside. The natural lighting is much more inviting, and much more pleasing to the eye than the flash. (It's very obvious that you used the flash here, too!) You could also take photos inside of the dog, as long as you have natural lighting near a window, so then you don't have to depend on the flash.
And just on a personal sidenote, one of my parents' cats is named CHIPPER! :-D |

Welcome to the site. I agree with the other comment that I would like to see the top of his head. Someone said in another post that your eye naturally goes to the lightest part of the image. In this case, it's the fur of a rug or larger dog on the left, so I think it distracts from the subject. Anyway, that my 2 cents.
