Default Itchy Pony

I was in the field with my camera today and quickly grabbed this shot of my pony scratching his back. (I had to act fast or I would have missed the shot entirely). Overall I like it, but I feel like there's so much that could be improved.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, but there's a few things I'm especially curious about. Is the focus okay? I was trying to focus on his eye but I think I moved too quickly and missed it. Is it too dark? Are the flies distracting or do they add to the feel of the image? I added a slight vignette, does it look okay or should I get rid of it?

Cote

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/2000)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 250 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Thanks guys! Maybe I'll try cloning them out in Photoshop.

Seems like you're just getting newbies replying here, but I actually think the flies makes the photo great, yes sure you need to look to see what these black spots are, but I'm sure if the image was larger they would be a lot more recognizable. In my opinion they make the photo look real. I think it's a great shot.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree that the flies help tell the story. Anyone who spots the flies can immediately identify with the pony's irritation and knows why he is reaching back to get rid of them.

Keep the flies. They tell the story of the photo.

I think the shot is great. The flies tell the story. If they weren't there then we would all wonder why your pony was all contorted! I love his hair! I have the same issue with focus when I am doing quick shots. It looks like your focus fell on the pony's right hip. Either way, I like!
