Now back to the regular scheduled show.

One of the biggest problem with this photo is the fact that there is so much going on in the background. Try and watch whats going on around your subject, keep your backgrounds simple.

I like the fact that you got down to the dogs level and shot it from that perspective. Next time, try backing up up more so the legs arent cut off, or get in closer so the legs dont appear to be cut off. Does that make sense? by backing up further it may help create more depth of field for you as well. Blurring the background will help give your subject more interest

Interesting.

There are several ways to improve this photo.

1. Get the flash off camera or at least bounce it off of something rather than fire directly at the dog. That will help with the green "demon eye" that dogs tend to get from flash used too directly. On a related note as the proud daddy of a dobermutt, that demon eye look makes the dog look really mean, and our doberdogs have enough troubles already with misconceptions.

Moving the flash off camera or bouncing it will help with the shadows thrown on the background too.

2. Get rid of the backpack to the side and the entertainment center in the background. All that clutter leads me to believe this was a snapshot (as in taken in a moment of opportunity, not as in horrible waste of time) rather than a planned out portrait. If that's the case, it is what it is and that's fine. If this was actually a set up shot, then just take some more time to consider what else shows in the frame other than the subject.

3. This is stuck somewhere between a head shot and a full body shot. The legs sticking out in the rear are a bit odd and distracting. I could easily turn them into really cool angel wings in PS, but that's a whole different discussion. Either move in or move out, but don't go half way.

Tahnks for the tips. This is my first time posting any pictures on this site and this is one of the first pics i took with my new camera. Yes you are right there is to much going on in the background and a full shot would have made it better. I jus like this pic because of the detail I think it shows with the hair. Thanks for the advice. The first guy was a jerk!

Yep! That's why I made a fortune as a professional. If you think I was unkind you should have seen and heard the remarks I and others got from our peers when we asked for critic. If you don't want it criticised - don't put it in that section. Incidentally, I am the first to give praise to all on this site when it calls for it. On the odd few times I have criticised strongly all hell seems to release itself on me.

I dont normally comment on remarks but Glayva, your comments on this one were NOT critique. It was thoughtless and held no value what so ever and frankly am not having fun removing your comments that are not helpful or constructive in any manner.
If you want to critique and tell them what they can do to improve and then refrain from adding in comments like you did. I would hope that sine you have made so much fortune with your photography that you had some cooth and would know how to say something, anything more constructive and helpful than what you did!
5280, please accept my apologies for hijacking your thread.
