Default Squish

Almost stepped on this guy while getting wood for a camp fire. The first 5 pictures didn't work with my flash, so I ditched the flash and side lighted it with an LED headlamp. I'm looking for any comments on the picture in general, but the lighting and composition in specific.

The picture has a cool feel to it, but I'm not sure I'm in love with the final result. What were you trying to achieve? I think you're in a middle ground with the lighting- you either need more to make the scene more clear, or less (but focused more on the toad/frog) and only illuminate your subject. Right now, it's like you're doing a bit of both and neither are working well. Still, like I said, it's got a cool vibe too it (earthy tones, blue lighting).

Thanks for the comment,

Thats a good question, because i am not really sure what i wanted to achieve. I was just just trying to shoot it before it jumped away. The only thing i did with the image was to crop it to what it looks like now.

I guess I only really wanted the toad to be the focus. In which case, I could crop the other stuff out. I'm not sure what else I should do post processing though. Anythoughts?

Oh, the blue lighting comes from the LED headlamp.
