Default Dog at the river

I have only been looking into photography for a few weeks so be gentle

I think I should invest in a tripod

I really like the colors and the background. It's too bad it's not just a little sharper, but it's a great shot.

tripod won't help you with animal photos, most of the time animals won't sit still in front of your camera!

With the shutter speed used, I don't think a tripod is the issue. Either the focus was a bit off or the lens is a bit soft at f/5...I suspect it's the latter as I can't find a point particularly sharp..but it could be a front-focus/back-focus issue with the lens...

when photographing animals, try to put yourself at their eye level. even if it means lying on the floor. try to get eye contact also. it makes the difference between a good portrait and just a snapshot.
