Default Black & White contrast

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum though I've been lurking around for a bit
I recently bought a Nikon D40 as a present to myself since I wanted to move beyond PS cameras and have been using my pets as models. For this picture, what do you think of the contrast between the grass and the cat? I really wanted to capture the face (esp. the white whiskers) and so I darkened the grass a bunch but do you think I over did it?

Specs
Camera: Nikon D40
Focal Length: 18mm
f stop: 3/5
shutter speed: 1/800 s
ISO: 200

Hello Kelfin,

First, welcome to DPS! The Nikon D40 was also my first DSLR and after some years of using it and upgrading I realized how good the D40 performs! Anyway, talking about your photo I think you did a great job! Subject is sharp, exposure is good as you didn't lose any detail on the cat's hair! Also I liked the way you used the effect you gave to it, kind of 300 movie effect =P
Priceless thing on your photo is your cat's face! hehehe Very amazing! That's all I have to say! Keep up the good work and hope to see more of your work!

Regards!

Thanks for the feedback Oriolhdz! I agree the look on his face is what makes the picture for me (and I know exactly what he was asking- stop taking pictures of me and pet me! )
