Default camera settings

This photo was taken with a nikon d-5000 in auto mode f/5.6 shutter speed 1/320 centered weighted iso 250. 55-200 mm set at 200mm. As I am a novice photographer couuld I have got a better shot using a different setting on my camera.

WELCOME to DPS Dave
I'm no expert on camera settings, but I have taken a lot of wildlife photography...and I am not sure how you could improve this shot...it's pretty fabulous the way it is. I'll leave the camera setting question to the experts if any of them show up.

A smaller aperture would probably have resulted in a slightly sharper/crisper image. It would also have increased the DOF so it's a +/- thing.
I find that sometimes I am better off getting tack sharp image using optimal f-stop and creating a slight focus separation in post. Lenses don't give their optimal performance wide open.
